Exterior & Interior Style Design

There no major change on 4Runner Exterior, The 2020 Version of 4runner still somewhat dated, blocky, ponderous shape. 17-inch alloy wheels are equipped across all models, barring the Limited and Nightshade trims that are shod in 20-inch six-spoke designs. Both the TRD Pro and the new Venture Special Edition, are fitted with roof racks, the latter boasting a MegaWarrior cargo unit. Additionally, the Venture and Nightshade trims have blacked-out exterior accents, with a black rear spoiler and bumper accents on the Venture. The Limited and Nightshade trims also have a power tilt-and-slide sunroof, with chrome exterior designs identifying the Limited and TRD Pro models. With almost imperceptible tweaks to the grille design, the 2020 model year looks pretty much the same as the previous year’s model.

Except for its base model, Every 2020 4runner have seven exterior colors choice: Super White, Barcelona Red Metallic, Classic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Nautical Blue Metallic, and Blizzard Pearl. For the Nightshade special edition, only three of the available colors can be had – Blizzard Pearl, Magnetic Gray, and Midnight Black. Depending on trim level, chrome highlights or blacked-out accents will be added to the exterior styling.

On the inside, Toyota’s touchscreen infotainment system is standard in the 4Runner. It’s a simple, intuitive setup that responds quickly to user inputs but even for 2020, it lacks Android Auto or Apple CarPlay integration. A smattering of power points throughout the cabin will keep everyone plugged in, but we’d happily trade some of the 12-volt outlets for more USB ports.

All 2020 4runner trims also provide A flexible cargo hold and several large, deep cubbies in the front row mean that the 4Runner is as versatile a hauler as it is a rock-crawler. Just don’t try to heave anything into the cargo hold unless you have a chiropractor on call the floor of the cargo hold is uncomfortably high off the ground. The two-row 4Runner we tested had an optional pull-out cargo deck designed to make loading and unloading heavy items, up to 440 pounds, a little easier. It can also double as a tailgate for seating.

Engine System & Performance

Every 2020 4runner Power comes from a standard 270-horsepower, 4.0-liter V-6 engine that teams with a five-speed automatic transmission. Rear- and four-wheel-drive versions are offered, and the 4Runner can seat up to seven with an available third row. Competitors include the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The 2020 4Runner’s 4.0-liter V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission can team with either rear-, four-, or all-wheel drive. Entry-level SR5 models are rear-wheel drive, while all other trims except the tipity-top Limited model come with selectable, part-time four-wheel drive. Those models have a manually selectable two-speed transfer case with a low-range setting.

Limited models have full-time all-wheel drive with a Torsen center differential that can apportion torque to the front or rear wheels as necessary, depending on road conditions and which wheels have traction. In our testing, the mid-level 4Runner TRD Off-Road model accelerated to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, it’s old-school V-6 groaning along with a gruff exhaust note.
